What is Dry Carbon?

“Dry carbon” generally refers to carbon-fiber components manufactured using a highly controlled composite process, most commonly pre-preg carbon fiber. The carbon material is pre-impregnated with a precise amount of resin before being laid into the mold and cured under controlled temperature and pressure.

The result is a lightweight, rigid, high-quality composite with an excellent fiber-to-resin ratio and a clean, consistent finish.


What is the difference between Pre-Preg and Standard Laminated Carbon?

The main difference is how the resin is introduced into the carbon fiber.

Pre-preg carbon fiber comes from the manufacturer with the resin already precisely distributed throughout the material. It is then laid up in a controlled orientation and cured under carefully regulated conditions.

Standard laminated carbon, often referred to as wet layup, starts with dry carbon fabric. Resin is manually applied during the layup process before the part is cured.


What is the advantage of Vacuum Infusion vs. Wet Layup?

Both processes can produce excellent carbon-fiber components, but vacuum infusion provides greater control over how resin moves through the laminate.

With vacuum infusion, the dry carbon layers are positioned in the mold and a vacuum is used to draw resin evenly through the material. This can help achieve a more controlled fiber-to-resin ratio, reduce excess resin, and minimize trapped air and voids.
